ABOUT THE NAME PRAGJYOTISH:
The ancient name of Assam was Kamrupa. It was also known as Pragjyotishpur. The word ‘Prag’which is derived from the Sanskrit , means Eastern and ‘Jyotisha’ means ‘Star’. ‘Pura' means ‘City’. Thus Pragjyotishpur means, ‘City of Eastern Astrology’. Due to the Astrology (Jyotish Sastra) practices which prevailed during those ancient days. It is said that, according to the Ramayana, the city of Pragjyotishpur was founded by Amrutraja, son of Kusa and grandfather of the famous stage Vishwamitra. Navagraha temple which is located in Guwahati now is a temple of planet worship called Navagraha, meaning ‘abode of nine planets of the solar system', and its connection with ancient research on astronomy and astrology is seen.
Navagraha temple, have been a great centre of study of astronomy and astrology.
